What is a Cookie?

A cookie is a cute name for a text-based file that is stored on your computer when you visit a website. Data is stored within the file and accessed by the website on each subsequent visit. There are many uses for cookies, such as allowing website owners to track useful data about their visitors and delivering targeted advertising based on pages that they have viewed.

Cookies are also used to provide ease of access by ‘remembering’ the user’s login details when the option is selected. A cookie is stored on their computer and accessed when they next visit the website, so there is no need to re-enter the information.

What is the EU Cookie Law?

The EU Cookie Law is part of the EU e-Privacy Directive that comes into force on the 26th May 2012. The e-Privacy Directive requires websites to be more open about how they use their visitors’ data. The law is designed to protect your users’ privacy and the policy on the use of cookies is very strict.

The law specifies that a website must obtain the user’s explicit permission to store cookies. This has huge implications for website owners who make use of data gathered from the storage of cookies, but we believe we have developed the best and least damaging way to do this.

How does Cookie Mix Work?

We have two options to choose from, so you can select the solution you prefer:

  • Toolbar: Our system will display a non-invasive toolbar that asks the user if they want to allow cookies. The cookie is only stored if the user agrees. Users who don’t consent are still able to use the website without cookies being stored.
  • Dialogue: A direct approach where a box overlays the website and asks the user if they want to allow cookies. The user has to make the decision to allow or disallow cookies before they are able to access the website.
